City uncertain when Greene Acres Lake will reopen

Greene Acres Lake continues to be closed to the public and city officials are unsure of when it will reopen.

Interim Parks and Recreation Director and Public Works Director Clint Bunch said the lake is being tested regularly for elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria.

High levels of the bacteria were discovered and the lake closed on Feb. 27. The rise in fecal coliform bacteria resulted from overflow from a blocked sewer line.

Bunch said the New Mexico Environment Department recommends that testing take place for 30 days to make sure levels are stable and safe before reopening the lake.

Bunch said testing has shown safe levels for the last week and a half.
