KIngsville sweeps Hounds to take series

PORTALES — First baseman Travis Earles went 3-for-3 in each game, driving in five runs in the nightcap, and Texas A&M-Kingsville took a Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader from Eastern New Mexico University 6-3 and 9-6 on Saturday at Greyhound Field.

The sweep gave Kingsville (12-9, 8-8 LSC) three out of four in the series after the teams split a twin bill on Friday.

Center fielder Clinton Thomas went 5-for-9 in the two games for Kingsville, including a triple in each one. Thomas doubled home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning of the seven-inning opener and added an RBI double in a two-run seventh.

Colby Schindler (1-1) allowed seven hits over six innings in the opener, while Dan Rogers (3-1) got the win with five innings in the nightcap. Taylor Taska earned saves in both games, giving him six for the season.

In the second game, the Javelinas opened an 8-1 lead with a four-run fourth, but ENMU (10-10, 9-7) closed to 8-6 in the seventh on an RBI double by Garrett Cook, who went 4-for-5 in the contest.

The Javelinas added an insurance run in the eighth on Thomas’ leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly by Earles, who also had run-scoring singles in the first and third and a two-run double in the fourth.

Kingsville’s top five batters combined to go 12-for-21 in the contest, with seven runs scored and eight RBIs.

Tyler Vance (2-2) worked into the fifth inning of the opener for ENMU. Starter Russell Campbell (1-3) was roughed up for 12 hits and eight runs in four innings in the nightcap.
