March 6, 1945: The Portales Daily News published a letter from Pvt. Kirby Widener, who wrote about life in the Philippines, where he was stationed. “People here live to a ripe old age,” he reported in the letter addressed to his dad, J.E. Widener, a local resident. “One man I met was 105 years old and as spry as a man of 40.”
