Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Residence: Portales
Occupation: Retired Eastern New Mexico University math professor
Volunteer work: He’s served with the Wesley Foundation at ENMU for 40 years, including time on the board of directors. He’s also tutored elementary-aged through college students at no charge; and served with Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt and Curry counties on the board of directors, on the ReStore committee and at work sites.
Why he does it: “Each one of those is a little different reason. I guess my greatest enjoyment in volunteering is as a tutor.”
Witten said tutoring is associated with his profession as a math professor and he finds great joy in giving insight to a student who had been confused.
“I guess all my volunteer work is selfish in a way because it’s my satisfaction in seeing others profit from my labors.”
