Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
David Heflin is the new pastor at the Church of Christ at Third Street and Kilgore Avenue.
Heflin and his wife, Katie, and their children Josiah, 6, Micah, 4, and Rebekah, nine months, moved to Portales in January.
Heflin is from north Texas and his wife’s parents live in California so they were looking for something in the middle.
Heflin said Portales is a good fit for his young family and the people here are very friendly.
What made you want to go into the ministry?
I would say that when I was 20 years old. I came into a different understanding about my faith that it really wasn’t about all the rules that you keep, but much more about a relationship.
During this time when I was at Sam Houston State University. At that time I was majoring in criminal justice, but I was involved in the campus ministry.
The campus minister there named, Scott Strothers, he challenged me to teach an adult Bible class for a supporting congregation that supported our campus ministry.
I had never done anything like that before and I was scared to death to do it, but I had been in prayer about an opportunity to contribute more to the campus leadership ministry there and I felt like I was sort of obligated to do it in a way because of that prayer. Once I went through the experience of teaching that Bible class, I think it lit in me a desire to have more of that.
What is your favorite passage to preach a sermon from?
It is Revelation, chapter five. The reason why I preach from that scripture or reference it on many different occasions is due to what it represents. I love that passage because it is coming on the heels of what is happening in Revelation four, where God is being worshiped at the throne and so this is a vision that John is having.
They’re searching for someone who is worthy to open the scroll, which is going to be God’s plan for this world and no one can be found.
But ultimately the one who is found is the lamb, who of course is Jesus Christ, and it just is this beautiful scene where there is a kingdom of all nations and tribes. They are bowing down before him because he has purchased with his blood this kingdom.
I like that scripture because it is a global vision of God’s kingdom. It just isn’t about one race and not just about one nation. It is a unique body in a sense that there are people from every nation, who can become a part of this kingdom and it ends with everything on earth and in heaven bowing down before the lamb of God.
What do you do in your free time?
I do enjoy reading. Not only do I enjoy reading theological books, but I enjoy reading fiction books of all kinds.
Of course, we spend a lot of time playing with the children or whatever they are involved in.
What is your favorite dessert?
German chocolate cake.
