Sheriff plans to talk to commission about dangerous intersections

Curry County Sheriff Matt Murray will be asking the Curry County Commission to help reduce the potential for crashes on N.M. 523.

The commission is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Clovis-Carver Public Library.

Murray said previously he planned to ask for some type of stop sign alert that would help remind drivers a stop is pending as they approach intersections such as the one at Curry Road G (Sugar Beet Road) and N.M. 523.

Don Teague, 74, of Bovina was killed Feb. 13 when his pickup was struck by an Oldsmobile driven by Hanna Godwin, 19, of Clovis at the intersection of 21st Street and Sugar Beet Road.

Murray and state police Capt. Jimmy Glascock said crashes at intersections like that one have the potential to be severe because of the speed and volume of traffic in the area.

Both are expected to present their concerns to the commission.

Murray is also expected to give a report on the status of the detention center.

The sheriff’s office took command of the facility after the administrator and several members of his command staff walked off the job Feb. 21, following a failed escape attempt by four inmates.

In other business, the commission is also expected to:

• Hear a financial report on the Special Events Center.

• Consider a bid to provide folding chairs for the events center.

• Go into executive session on a potential land acquisition, with an action item scheduled afterwards to approve a resolution with the New Mexico Finance Authority.
