SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior guard Camille Perkins scored 23 points and Angelo State rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the first half to beat Eastern New Mexico University 69-57 Saturday night in Lone Star Conference women’s basketball.
The win keeps the Rambelles (12-12, 5-5 South) in the hunt for one of four spots from the division in the upcoming LSC tournament. Angelo pulled into a tie for fourth with Abilene Christian, which lost at last-place Midwestern State 64-61, and pulled within a game of third-place Texas A&M-Kingsville, routed at Tarleton State 91-52.
ENMU (7-18, 2-8) was led by 18 points from junior Cat Clay. Fellow juniors Tori Northcutt and Kara Bible added 11 and 10, respectively.
The Zias fell behind 5-0 early, but went on a 21-5 run capped by freshman Hannah Altheide’s 3-pointer to lead 32-22 with three minutes left in the half.
Angelo’s Leah LeMaire hit two free throws at the 2:12 mark, starting a 9-0 Rambelles to make it 32-31 at the half, capped by Cassie Wright’s jumper at the buzzer.
Perkins then downed a 3-pointer on the first possession after the break. ENMU took one more lead, at 46-45 on Northcutt’s 3-pointer with 15:22 to go.
Nikki Ingram’s layup with 7:17 left pulled the Zias to 52-50, but they managed only three more baskets the rest of the way. Angelo didn’t take its first double-digit lead until just over a minute remained.
Forward Morgan Youngblood had four 3-pointers and 14 points for ASU, while sophomore center Paige Weishuhn added 11 points — all in the second half. Weishuhn, shooting 45 percent for the season from beyond the arc, made her only 3-pointer in seven attempts with 2:15 left in the game for a nine-point Rambelles lead.
