Closing arguments in Watson trial set for Monday

Freedom New Mexico

Closing arguments in the slaying trial of William “Billy Joe” Watson are scheduled for Monday morning.

Watson, a Roosevelt County farmer, is accused of hiring low-ranking Aryan Brotherhood member Donald Taylor to kill rancher Jimmie Bo Chunn in 2005. The trial began more than two weeks ago.

Defense attorney Gary Mitchell said his client had taken the stand and testified that he had nothing to do with Chunn’s shooting death.

“I feel extremely confident that I represented an innocent man, and I’m optimistic the jury will see it the same way,” he said.

District Attorney Matt Chandler said he could not comment on the trial because he didn’t want to taint pending jury deliberations.
