New Mexico State Police identified Joseph R. Ulibarri, 46, as the cyclist who was struck and killed by a pickup Tuesday on N.M. 267.

Ulibarri wasn’t wearing his helmet and was near the center of the road in an unlit area when he was hit, according to an e-mail from State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Eric F. Garcia. He was pronounced dead at the scene by state police.

Police were unable to identify Ulibarri at the scene because he was not carrying identification.

Jesus Davalos of Portales was driving his 2006 Dodge pickup when he hit Ulibarri around 6:30 p.m. on N.M. 267 between mile markers 4 and 5, according to Garcia.
