Cyclist killed in collision

A male cyclist died after being struck by a pickup on N.M. 267 Tuesday night, according to New Mexico State Police.

According to an e-mail release from State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Eric F. Garcia, a 2006 Dodge pickup driven by 18-year-old Jesus Davalos of Portales was traveling west when it hit the cyclist around 6:30 p.m. between Mile Markers 4 and 5.

The cyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet and was near the center of the road in an unlit area when he was hit, according to the e-mail. Davalos and his passenger, whom the release didn’t name, told police the cyclist was crossing the road from north to south.
