Police: Man charged after attempting to hide drugs under overpass

An El Paso, Texas man was charged with felony drug distribution Friday after New Mexico State Police say he tried to stash more than 200 pounds of marijuana under an overpass on Interstate 40 near Tucumcari.

State police said Henry Alan Lowe, 40, lost control of his car and slammed into a snow-covered shoulder on I-40.

Police said while questioning the injured Lowe, officers noticed footprints in the snow leading from the trunk of his car to the overpass. Officers said they found 238 pounds of marijuana wrapped in plastic bundles with an approximate street value of $640,000.

Lowe was taken to Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari for treatment of a laceration to his head.

After treatment, Lowe was charged with distribution of marijuana and tampering with evidence and booked into Quay County jail, police said.
