Council to discuss support for Ute water project

During their meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, Portales City Council is set to discuss a resolution of support for a proposed bill to authorize Eastern New Mexico Water Authority to operate the Ute Water Pipeline Organization.

The state Legislature opens Tuesday and is to consider the bill during the session.

“It’s basically asking for support from the community that it belongs to,” City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry said.

The organization is looking for support from Roosevelt and Curry counties, Portales, Clovis, Texico and other towns involved.

Next on the agenda is an update on the Yam Movie Palace and an addition to the contract. Terry said the update would present where construction is and how much money is left, and the addition to the contract allots money to bring the theater to a point where it is usable.

“All the bells and whistles won’t be in place, but at least it will be functioning,” Martinez-Terry said.

The council will also hold a public hearing for an ordinance to alter the zoning to residential on Industrial Drive near the Portales Recreation Complex.

Also on the agenda are the Mayor’s Christmas Tree: Operation Santa Cop program reports and approval of preliminary plat for Combs Subdivision unit 2.
