Power outage blamed on weather

Freedom New Mexico

For the second time in less than a week, Portales residents found themselves without electrical power.

Police said 50 to 60 homes lost power about 5:40 p.m. Thursday for an hour after a lateral fuse blew on a power line on Main and North Abilene streets.

Chief Deputy of Police said the outages were spotty at times in the 1000, 1200 and 1600 blocks of North Main.

“We made arrangements to set up a shelter because it is was late and cold,” Berry said. “We were getting things together and then we started getting calls that the power was coming on.”

Xcel Energy spokesman Wes Reeves blamed extreme cold and wind.

“So far everything is holding up around the region,” Reeves said. “When we see extreme temperature like we are seeing, it is likely we might see some outages.”
