New license plates honor universities

Eastern New Mexico University has its own New Mexico license plate.

The new plates, which feature the university’s Zia symbol and greyhound on a green background, are available now, according to a news release from the state Taxation and Revenue Department.

“I think this is a good opportunity for Eastern New Mexico University alumni to show pride in their institution,” said university President Steven Gamble. “The license plates are obviously very visible, and I’ll look forward to seeing ENMU license plates on the road.”

Each license plate costs $37, $20 more than a regular plate, with $25 going to the school, according to the press release. As for the remainder of the price, state law requires the Motor Vehicle Division, part of the Taxation and Revenue Department, to keep $10 to manufacture the plates and $2 for a transaction fee.

Taxation and Revenue spokesman S.U. Mahesh said statute allows the university to use its portion of the proceeds for any purpose.

New Mexico residents don’t have to wait until they renew their vehicle registration to purchase a plate.

“They can replace their license plate any time they want,” Mahesh said, adding that the registration would transfer to the new plate.

A license plate for New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell became available this week, too. New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech and University of New Mexico already have license plates representing them.

The ENMU Alumni Association has its own unofficial plates for the front of cars, as well.
