Education column: Alumni Association planning hall of honor

So, the best part of my day is not attending meetings.

But, I have to tell you about this one meeting I actually enjoyed attending.

It was the Clovis High School Alumni Association meeting. You might think I've been drinking too much eggnog because I was excited about attending a meeting, but you would be wrong.

The meeting was exciting because the Alumni Association is making plans to institute a Hall of Honor at the high school.

Wayne Marshall, Principal of Clovis High School, has already selected a location in the school foyer to display pictures and information of distinguished graduates selected to be in the Hall of Honor.

The stated purpose of the Hall of Honor will be “to recognize the accomplishments of former graduates of Clovis High School whose achievements, strengths of character and citizenship serve as models to inspire and challenge today's students.”

The Hall of Honor Award will be available to any alumni graduated from Clovis High School and is at least 30 years old at the time of their nomination.

Categories will be: Business and Industry, Government and Public Service, and Sports and Entertainment.

Also, the Association members agreed that awards may be given posthumously and, in that case, there would be no age requirement.

Lendra Hailey, President of the Alumni Association, said they are accepting applications through Jan. 15.

The Association plans on making selections by Jan. 31.

Additionally, a banquet is tentatively scheduled for May, when three Clovis High School graduates will be inducted into the newly established Hall of Honor.

I absolutely love being on the ground floor of a new and exciting program.

Not only will the Hall of Honor serve our community by recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of our graduates, but it will also serve to encourage our students to continue to strive for excellence.

Celebrations are great and I can't wait until May. (Okay, I have a senior and am not too excited about her graduating, but I am excited about the Hall of Honor banquet.)
