Hounds hold on late against Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Junior guard Victor Reid scored 19 points and his jump shot with 1:59 left started a game-ending 9-0 run that secured Eastern New Mexico University’s 82-71 Lone Star Conference men’s crossover victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Monday night.

The Greyhounds (5-4), who ended a three-game losing streak, built a 71-51 lead on two free throws by Reid with 8:38 left. But they didn’t score again for six minutes as the Bulldogs (3-7) cut the margin to 71-69 with 4:33 left remaining on an 18-0 run.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Junior guard Victor Reid scored a season-best 19 points and hit a jump shot with 1:59 left to start a game-ending 9-0 run that secured Eastern New Mexico University’s 82-71 Lone Star Conference men’s crossover victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Monday night.

Junior forward Tyler Jefferson added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Greyhounds (5-4), while junior guard Tralyn Harden chipped in 14 points and senior guard Jimmie Marshall scored 13.

The victory allowed the Hounds to exceed their win total for all of last year (4-23).

Junior guard Charleston Flemmings led all scorers with 25 points for the Bulldogs, while senior forward Damian Henderson added 16.

The Hounds, who ended a three-game losing streak, built a 71-51 lead on two free throws by Reid with 8:38 left. But they didn’t score again for 6 1/2 minutes as the Bulldogs (3-7) went on an 18-0 run to cut the margin to 71-69 with 4:33 remaining.

The Bulldogs didn’t score a field goal after that. Marshall and Southwestern’s Ross Moore each converted a pair of free throws, and the Hounds made a defensive stop before Reid’s basket gave them some breathing room.

The Bulldogs went 0-for-4 from the field and committed three turnovers in the remaining time.

Marshall’s 3-pointer with just under a minute gone put the Hounds in front 3-2 and wiped out Southwestern’s only lead. Two free throws by reserve Michael Brown put ENMU in front 28-18 with six minutes left in the half and the margin stayed in double figures the rest of the period.

However, with the score 41-24 after two free throws by Marshall at the 2:28 mark, the Bulldogs scored the final six points of the half to make it 41-30.

ENMU built the lead back to 14 a minute into the second half before the Bulldogs tried to chip away. They got as close as six points, but the Hounds took off on an 18-7 run to seemingly put the game away.

Flemmings and freshman forward Aleksa Rovic then hit 3-pointers to get the Mustangs’ surge going, and another 3-pointer by Flemmings made it 71-69 with just over 4 1/2 minutes left.

After an exchange of turnovers, Marshall hit two free throws to end the dry spell. Moore’s two foul shots cut the margin back to two, but the Mustangs did not score again.

After Reid’s basket made it 75-71, Dannon Wafer stole the ball and found Jefferson for a layup. Reed then came up with a steal and scored for an eight-point lead with under a minute left.

The Bulldogs didn’t score a field goal after that. ENMU’s Jimmie Marshall and Southwestern’s Ross Moore each converted a pair of free throws, and the Hounds made a defensive stop before Reid’s basket gave them some breathing room.
