Teen leads police on high-speed chase

An unlicensed 15-year-old girl led Clovis police on a high-speed pursuit through town and into the county Monday night before crashing into a drainage ditch.

The teen is charged with two felony counts of aggravated fleeing, aggravated assault on a police officer and assault on a police officer in addition to traffic charges related to the pursuit, according to a police report.

The girl later told officers she fled because she was afraid her brother, who had been driving while intoxicated, would go to jail, the report said.

Her 20-year-old brother was charged with aggravated DWI and a 17-year-old female passenger was charged as an accesory for encouraging the girl to flee police.

Around 10 p.m. Curry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a crash at State Road 209 and Curry Road 16.

Undersheriff Wesley Waller said the girl, attempting to elude city officers, was driving the 2006 GMC sport utility vehicle northbound on State Road 209 at speeds of up to 90 mph and crashed when she failed to neotiate a left hand turn onto Curry Road 16.

The vehicle then crashed into a fence and concrete drainage structure on the northeast corner of the intersection, he said.

There were no injuries.

Around 9:30 p.m. an officer received a report the vehicle was being driven by a drunken driver and located the SUV in the area of Fourth and Hickory Streets, a report said.

The girl told the officer her intoxicated 20-year-old brother had been driving but wouldn’t drive any more.

When the officer asked the man for his driver’s license, he, the girl and two female teen passengers jumped into the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed.

According to the report, the girl drove the SUV towards an officer twice, forcing him to jump out of the way to avoid being hit when he attempted to stop her in the area of Sycamore and 21st streets and sped around other vehicles driving into oncoming traffic and drove through a red light at Prince Street and Colonial Parkway.
