Hounds ninth in South Central Regional

ABILENE, Texas — Junior Richard Kogo and freshman Jacob Lozano led the Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country team to a ninth-place finish in Saturday’s South Central Regional, hosted by Abilene Christian.

Kogo, from Kenya, finished 34th in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 32 minutes, 54.01 seconds while Lozano, from Hobbs, was 37th in 33:03.

Missouri Southern swept to both team championships. The Lions finished with 56 points to outdistance Southwest Baptist on the men’s side, while they won the women’s competition with a near-perfect score of 18 to 84 for second-place Dallas Baptist.

Perhaps the most stunning turn of events was that 19-time Lone Star Conference men’s champion Abilene Christian finished behind the Greyhounds — 10th with 264 points to 251 for ENMU.

ACU had won nine of the past 10 regional titles, although Missouri Southern — which won it in 2007 — went in as the team favorite.

Abilene Christian’s Amos Sang was the men’s individual champion, posting a time of 29:53.23.

Missouri Southern went 1-2-3-5-7 in women’s competition, led by Kimi Shank’s winning time of 20:59.05. The Zias were 18th with 447 points — interestingly, one notch ahead of Abilene Christian (499).

Sophomore Nicole Reid, ENMU’s top runner all fall, again led the Zias with a 36th-place finish in a time of 23:16.68.
