Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Leaders at Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University say non-credit classes are a direct response to community needs.
Judith Spillane, the business and non-credit training coordinator at Clovis Community College, said her institution’s offerings change to meet needs.
“We also offer a large number of non-credit online classes through our third-party education-to-go,” Spillane said.
One such class is a forklift training, which can be used as a refresher course or help someone get a certification.
Other classes in the works for the spring semester include fly fishing, rehearsal and performance for the annual High Plains Chorale Christmas Concert, soap making and conversational Spanish.
ENMU and CCC offer Kids’ College, an educational outreach for children up to 16. Students can choose art, physical education, computer training, tennis or exercise, either in a day or over the course of eight weeks.
Special Programs Coordinator Lukas Cash said ENMU also likes to involve children in the university, and programs such as Kids’ College have done a great job connecting children to the campus.
In the spring, for children, ENMU is offering ballet, star gazing in May and an after-school program.
ENMU is also offering a variety of fitness courses for the community this spring.
“The classes do change from semester to semester,” Cash said. “The popular ones usually repeat semester after semester, but we try a few new ones every semester.”
The spring semester has health flow yoga, aquatic fitness, aquatic aerobics and Zumba classes for adults.
“Zumba is our newest class this semester,” Cash said. “It’s an aerobics-like class, with more Latin dance flavor.”
Cash said the costs of classes vary.
