Investigation of pedestrian death continues

Portales police released new details Monday about the death of 71-year-old Gloria Ann Inge, killed after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing a city street.

Inge was hit Friday by a 16-year-old driver at Second and Abilene streets. Inge was taken to Roosevelt General Hospital and later airlifted to a Lubbock hospital, where she later died from her injures.

Police declined to identify the driver, noting the case is still being investigated.

Police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said the 16 year-old was eastbound on Second Street.

“Inge was crossing Second Street and there was some traffic stopped,” Berry said. “He (the driver) was in a lane where there were a couple of people crossing and he came up beside some vehicles that had stopped.”

Berry said Inge was hit while in the north part of the cross walk.

“An investigator did some reconstruction out there when traffic was really light,” Berry said. “So, we can get an idea as to what was going on at that time.”

Berry said police haven’t determined if the driver could have seen Inge in the crosswalk or if the other vehicles blocked the view.

Berry said no charges have been filed.
