No jobs will be lost at Clovis Municipal Schools if budget cuts proposed by the superintendent are approved by the school board.
The board has scheduled a special meeting 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss budget cuts and get public feedback.
In a press release issued Friday by Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm, proposed budget cuts are outlined in two phases:
• One would be implemented immediately to slice $600,000 from the district’s $54 million budget.
• The second phases includes cuts that become effective next year school year if the Legislature further cuts education in the January session.
The majority of immediate cuts would be dealt with at the district’s central office by moving around staff and keeping vacant positions open, Seidenwurm said.
Travel budgets will also be cut in half by reducing out-of-state travel and bringing professional development seminars to the district.
Cuts for the 2010-2011 school year include moving middle school athletics and sixth grade band outside the school day. Seidenwurm said the move would save the district about $160,000.
Also, orchestra would be eliminated as a district-wide program. Seidenwurm said after five years of recruiting, the program has only 14 middle school students participating.
Furthermore, student and teacher support provided through instructional coaches, literacy specialists and special education liaisons will be cut by a third.
