It’s that time of year to start watching the skies for The Great Pumpkin; Halloween is upon us again. Carving jack-o-lanterns, picking out the best costume, caramel apples, haunted houses and of course, the largest bags to hold all of the candy you can collect.
Getting dressed up in costumes and walking the neighborhoods in search of the best candy or a really good scare is on many people’s minds. But there are a few things parents need to remember during Halloween.
First, children get preoccupied with collecting candy and don’t always remember to check the street before crossing. Motorists need to watch for children darting out from between parked cars, especially since the little Optimist Primes and Hanna Montanas don’t always watch for cars. The thought of all the free candy they can carry may override their better judgment for safety. Parents need to ensure their children wear reflective clothing as well as carry glow sticks or flashlights to make them more visible.
Adult costume parties can be a great event, but don’t forget to have a designated driver for those who drink. The last thing anyone wants is to have an accident, especially one involving a child getting hurt. Motorists must remember these things when they are out on the road on Halloween. They need to watch for children everywhere, especially on roadways, medians and curbs. Take special care when entering and exiting driveways.
The little Harry Potter’s and Strawberry Shortcakes are preoccupied with the allure of all that candy they are going to have after the night is over.
The bottom line: Take extra care and use more caution when driving on All Hallows Eve. If you are going to drink, don’t drive, have a designated driver.
The 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron will have extra patrols on foot in each of our housing areas during the scheduled trick-or-treat hours of from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
