Hounds third in LSC cross country

CANYON, Texas — Freshman Jacob Lozano of Hobbs finished 11th in a time of 26 minutes, 27 seconds over eight kilometers, leading the Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country team to a third-place finish on Saturday in the LSC Championships, hosted by West Texas A&M.

With 109 points, the Greyhounds finished behind only nationally-ranked Abilene Christian (33) an Tarleton State (75) in team standings. It was the best finish for the Hounds in the history of the program, topping fourth-place showings in 2005-06.

Kenyan junior Richard Kugo was 14th for ENMU, posting a time of 26:47.

The team title was the 19th in a row for Abilene Christian. Amos Sang led a 1-2-5-12-13 finish for the Wildcats with a winning time of 24:44.

ENMU’s women, meantime, were seventh out of 11 full teams with 178 points. Midwestern State captured team honors with 70 points, three ahead of Angelo State.

Sophomore Nicole Reid, the Zias’ top runner all year, led the team again with a 15th-place finish in a time 25 minutes, 00.4 seconds over six kilometers. Senior Gerri Martin was next for the Zias, coming in 24th at 25:26.3.

Midwestern State had the individual winner in Sydney Cole, who posted a time of 23:02.5.

ENMU’s runners are scheduled to return to action in South Central Region competition on Nov. 7 at Abilene, Texas.
