Quilt fundraiser to benefit Habitat for Humanity

Gail Strickler and Elizabeth Lawrence spent a month building their log cabin.

Now they’re hoping to find it a home.

Strickler, of Clovis, and Lawrence, of Portales, are raffling their creation — a quilt large enough to fit on a queen-size bed — to benefit Roosevelt and Curry counties’ Habitat for Humanity.

“This quilt is a log-cabin design and they thought it would be appropriate since we build houses,” said Habitat Executive Director Joyce Davis. “So it relates to us in that way and it has fall colors. It is beautifully done and it is a wonderful example of quilting.”

Strickler is a member of Habitat’s board of directors and said she is always looking for ways to raise money for the organization that helps build homes for those less fortunate.

This is the first time they’ve used a quilt for a fundraiser, but they’re expecting good results.

“Elizabeth has designed and made quilts for our church fundraisers,” Strickler said. “We raised money for a new organ at our church from a couple of quilts she made.”

The 95-inch by 95 inch log-cabin quilt appeared in the High Plains Quilt Festival earlier this month. The pattern is called Log Cabin with Stars and was designed by Charlene Jorgenson, who owns Quilting for the Heartland.

Raffle tickets sell for $10 each or six for $50.

Some of the money is going toward the cost of fabric to make the quilt and what remains goes to Habitat, Davis said.

The first Oktober-Feast: A German food fundraiser is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Portales’ First United Methodist Church and patrons can buy quilt raffle tickets with their meal.

The quilt is scheduled to be awarded in a drawing on Nov. 12 when First United Methodist Church hosts a turkey dinner.
