Student struck by car in PHS parking lot

A Portales High School senior was hospitalized with a possible broken arm Thursday after she was hit by a car driven by a fellow student in the school parking lot.

The 18-year-old female was taken to the hospital for a possible broken arm, and was later transported to Lubbock for an orthopedic surgeon to look at it, said PHS principal Melvin Nusser.

“It was just kind of a freak accident,” Nusser said. “He wasn’t necessarily driving at a high rate of speed or anything like that in the video I did turn over to the police.”

The 18-year-old was in front of the car, and the minor driver was making a left hand turn when he clipped her, knocking her down, Nusser said.

Portales police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said police are still investigating the mishap.

“Right now, we’re looking to cite the driver for reckless driving,” Berry said. “We still have some more investigation to do.

“Nothing shows us that he was doing something outrageous in that parking lot,” Berry said.
