Getting to know: Retiree keeps busy with volunteer work

Sharon Davis of Roosevelt County may have retired from the retail furniture business, but she keeps busy with a multitude of volunteer activities.

Davis and her friend Joyce Cone started the Zia Moms program, which supports the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team.

Davis has taught Sunday school since she was 18 years old. She is a district officer and Holiday Happenings committee member in Altrusa International Inc. of Portales, as well as a member of the 75th Anniversary Committee at ENMU and the Windmill Committee with the Roosevelt Chamber County of Commerce.

On top of all that, she organizes her class reunions and watches her 2-year-old grandson.

Why do you volunteer?

I don’t know; I just seem to be really driven to volunteer. I guess my parents taught us to volunteer and taught us if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

Do you have a favorite memory of volunteering?

Maybe Holiday Happenings, (an annual fundraising lunch). The first year, we met in the Memorial Building and had 23 tables. Now we have 68. We raise between $5,000 and $10,000. It’s just unbelievable to me how people keep coming up with ideas, and it’s just such a good event for the community.

Do you remember a table design at Holiday Happenings that really stuck out?

My table this year is going to be a tribute to my mother (the late Clytie Calton). My mother loved Anna Lee dolls.

What would you say is the hardest lesson you’ve learned from volunteering?

That the more you volunteer, the more you get asked to volunteer. There’s so much more I’d like to do. But you just get your plate full with the things you continually do and you can’t do any more.

What’s your favorite thing to do with your grandchildren?

Sporting events and reading. I love to watch them play basketball and football. I have five grandchildren.

What is your favorite thing to cook for any meal?

Sunday dinner — roast, potatoes, rolls. My mother always had Sunday dinner, and all my family, every single one of us, came for dinner. After my mother died, everybody started coming here to my house. I have 20-30 people here every Sunday.

If you could go back in time, what one event would you like to witness?

I love living in this time because it’s so comfortable. I would love to walk the streets that Jesus walked.
