Hounds shut out Mustangs 2-0

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s defense limited University of the Southwest to one shot on goal Friday, and the Greyhounds broke away in the second half for a 2-0 men’s soccer victory at the ENMU pitch.

The Hounds (6-2-1) struggled to break through, but with just over nine minutes gone in the second half they maneuvered the ball to the left of the Mustangs’ net. Senior defender Michael James found junior forward Edgar Bear, who headed the ball past Mustangs goalkeeper David Metcalfe for a 1-0 lead.

With just over 10 minutes left, freshman midfielder David Kim fired a shot at the net, then picked up his own rebound in front and scored an insurance goal.

Junior goalkeeper Josh Bussen of Clovis, a transfer from USW, had a relatively quiet day but earned his first ENMU shutout and improved to 4-1 for the season.

The Hounds return to action on Sunday with a home non-league outing against Adams State, set for a noon start.
