Texas-Permian Basin avenged a home loss last week to Eastern New Mexico University, edging the Zias 25-22, 27-25, 19-25, 25-20 Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball at Greyhound Arena.
Alex Genung had 12 kills and Heather Sanchez added 11 for the Falcons (7-11), who led all the way in the fourth game after the Zias dominated the third set to cut the margin to 2-1.
Junior Veronica Valdez-Kent, sophomore Jessica King and freshman Megan Carpenter all had 13 kills for the Zias (4-12). ENMU collected 90 digs, led by senior libero Caitlin Murphy’s 28, the most digs by the Zias in a match since Sept. 23 last year at Wayland Baptist.
The Zias led 13-9 in the first game before Permian Basin responded with an 8-2 run. ENMU grabbed a 20-18 lead, helped by consecutive kills from Megan Kabrick, before the Falcons closed out the game with a 7-2 finish.
ENMU rallied from a 15-6 deficit to take a 24-21 lead in the second game, but Permian Basin stayed alive with the next four points and opened a 2-0 lead in games with a kill from Chassidy Johnson.
The Zias took control of the third game with a 7-0 run fueled by two aces from Murphy for an 18-11 lead, and Permian Basin never got closer than four points after that. But the Falcons led the entire way in game 4, going up 12-6 with a 7-2 run and holding off several charges by the Zias down the stretch.
ENMU returns to a Lone Star Conference play on Thursday in a 6 p.m. (MDT) match against Texas Woman’s at Denton, Texas. On Saturday, the Zias visit Texas A&M-Commerce in a 1 p.m. (MDT) start.
