PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University’s Society of Political Scholars (E.S.P.S.), in conjunction with the political science department, will host a public forum on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Sandia Room of the Campus Union Building to celebrate Constitution Day.

In 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention met to sign the Constitution. To commemorate the event, ENMU invites the community to ponder constitutional questions in a relaxed environment. Refreshments will be served, and free pocket Constitutions will be given out.

Topics will cover the historical significance of the document and the impact the Constitution has on modern political policies. Issues include Second Amendment rights, the Preamble, the concept of federalism and why some states chose not to ratify the Constitution.

“The Constitution was meant to be a living breathing document detailing the principles of governing and, while it has changed over time, it has just as much impact on every day events as it did when it was signed,” said Dr. Sue Strickler, professor of political science.
