Griffons get past Zias in four games

PORTALES — Missouri Western rallied from a one-game deficit to beat Eastern New Mexico University 16-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 Friday night in the ENMU Invitational at Greyhound Arena.

The Griffons (2-4) got 16 kills and eight digs from Kelli Sicner and 13 kills, 10 digs and three aces from Meghan Voelz. Western bailed out the second game, outscoring the Zias 12-1 down the stretch to erase a 22-13 deficit.

The Griffons led virtually all the way in the third and fourth games, although the fourth set remained close throughout.

The Zias (1-5) were led by 14 kills from Jessica King and 13 from Veronica Valdez-Kent. Senior libero Caitlin Murphy notched 27 digs, while setter Karen McIntyre had 40 assists.

In other matches on Friday, Colorado State-Pueblo beat Fort Hays State 25-16, 25-23, 25-18; Missouri Western topped Oklahoma Panhandle State 25-20, 25-17, 25-11; Fort Hays got past New Mexico Highlands 26-24, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, and Pueblo won over Panhandle 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14.

Today’s six-match schedule has Panhandle against Highlands at 9 a.m., Pueblo against ENMU at 11 a.m., Highlands against Western at 1 p.m., Fort Hays against Panhandle at 3 p.m., Western against Pueblo at 5 p.m. and ENMU against Fort Hays at 7 p.m.
