Roosevelt County deputies capture parole violator

Sheriff’s deputies said they shot a 28-year-old Roosevelt County man with an electronic stun gun Wednesday while he was trying to escape.

The man is identified as Juan Z. Bustamante and is accused being a probation and parole absconder.

Chief Deputy Malin Parker said a warrant for Bustamante’s arrest was issued Tuesday after he failed to check in as ordered with parole officers.

Parker said Bustamante was spotted by a special survelliance team watching his home in Portales and fled a few minutes later after a traffic stop in the 300 block of South Avenue B.

Bustamante tried to run away and was shot by officers with a Taser stun gun, Parker said.

Bustamante wasn’t injured by the stun gun, Parker said.

“The judge had let him out on a furlough, something to do with his child,” Chief Deputy Malin Parker said. “He was supposed to be checking in with his parole officer while he was out on the furlough and he failed to do so.”

In addition to the absconder warrant, Bustamante is charged with concealing his identity; resisting, evading or obstruction an officer and being a felon in possession of firearm.

Bustamante is being held at Roosevelt County Detention Centerin lieu of $12,500 bond.

Two other men in the car stopped by officers were also charged.

Eleno Bustamante, 20, of Portales was charged with resisting, evading or obstructing an officer and was released after posting $1,500 bond.

Eric Martinez, 30, of Portales was charged with concealing his identity is in jail in lieu of $1,200 bond.
