ENMU hires police chief

Eastern New Mexico University has named a former graduate its new police chief.

Brad Mauldin, a sergeant and night shift supervisor at the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department, replaces Raymond Chambers, who retired last month. The university announced Maudlin’s hiring Thursday.

Mauldin is a 2008 graduate of ENMU with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and minor in psychology.

He said his goal as the new police chief will be to mold the department into a progressive, community oriented law enforcement agency.

Mauldin said it is excited to be back at ENMU and he has a vested interest in the university community.

“I have a strong passion for education and law enforcement,” Mauldin said. “As the ENMU Chief of Police it would allow me to have the best of both of these worlds.”

ENMU President Steven Gamble said he is pleased the university found someone with Mauldin’s experience and commitment.

“He was previously employed on our staff and did a very good job (years ago),” Gamble said. “He got his college degree from Eastern and he came very recommended from the other places he had worked for.”

Mauldin has served in variety of positions which include training officer, crime scene investigator, detective, evidence technician and custodian and patrol sergeant. He also compiled statistical data for the sheriff’s annual report.

Mauldin said he has a strong views on law enforcement, especially at the university level.

“I personally feel law enforcement at a university level must have an active involvement in university events and activities,” Mauldin said. “These law enforcement officers must also be approachable, visually present and possess strong interpersonal communicative skills.”
