Clovis Community College and the Curry County Wellness Council are joining forces for a community back-to-school bash, combining fun and education.

The Family Fun Day and Health Fair is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at CCC.

Event organizer John Hansen said the college has hosted a back-to-school event the last five years. Both entities seemed to have their back-to-school events about the same time and they decided to combine the two, he said.

The parking lot at CCC will be full of bouncy houses, free food, vendors, face painting booths, story time and a classic car show.

CCC’s Town Hall will be the site of a Rock Band tournament complete with a 14 foot screen.

The commons area will be transformed into a full health fair with more than 30 vendors.

CCWC coordinator Andrea Bell said the combination will make for a bigger and better event.

The wellness council is giving away $200 at the 8:30 a.m. 5K Fun Walk. Prizes will be given out to children throughout the event for answering trivia questions and a scavenger hunt.

Also, the Clovis Police Department will be on hand to provide fingerprinting for children, which Bell said, can be useful in case a child goes missing.

The health fair also provides immunizations, dental, hearing, vision and early developmental screenings.

“The event is to get kids ready to get back into the pace of school, to promote healthy kids, and educate them on how to stay active and be healthy,” Bell said.

Hansen called the event a community effort because of local donations from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hastings and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
