Training device creates bomb scare

A Monday night bomb scare turned into a training exercise for Cannon Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel when a brief case filled with bomb components turned out to be a dummy device made for training.

Responders concluded the device was a training aid that had been owned by a deceased Albuquerque arson investigator.

Curry County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched about 8 p.m. to a home in the 1000 block of Curry Road 6.

A resident reported finding a briefcase with wires and other components that looked like a bomb, Undersheriff Wesley Waller said.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts from Cannon were called when a deputy confirmed the suspicious nature of the briefcase, Waller said.

EOD personnel examined the device and determined that while there were no explosives in the briefcase, the device had the other components needed to make a bomb, Waller said.

Waller said the resident told officers his brother-in-law’s belongings had been put in a storage shed at the residence when he died about 15 or 20 years before.

The man said he was going through the shed Monday night when he came across the briefcase and called authorities.
