Shots fired at police officer's home

A 25-year-old Clovis man is in jail after police say he shot up an officer’s home and squad car with a stolen AR-15 Friday.

Police said Albert Lopez was upset from an earlier confrontation with officers.

Lopez is being held in lieu of a $97,000 bond, jail officials said.

According to information released by Clovis police today:

Around 11 p.m. Friday officers were dispatched to northwest Clovis near the hospital for a report of shots fired.

Police discovered officer Steven Eiduk’s home and patrol vehicle had been shot.

Eiduk told officers he was using a computer in the back of his house when he heard gunshots, grabbed his bullet proof vest and weapon and ran outside, according to a police report.

His wife called 911. She was sitting in the living room at the front of the house when she heard the shots.

The couple’s child was in a front bedroom at the time of the shooting.

No one was injured.

Police Capt. Patrick Whitney said police believe Lopez saw Eiduk’s parked squad car and opened fire — not targeting him specifically — but acting in anger towards police in general.

While officers were investigating the shooting at Eiduk’s home, they received a report of another drive-by shooting involving a white SUV in the 500 block of Wallace.

Lopez and an unidentified passenger were stopped driving a white Isuzu Rodeo a few blocks from the scene at North Drive and Wallace Street.

Inside the vehicle officers found a stolen AR-15 rifle, “several” .223 caliber shell casings on the floorboard near the passenger and driver’s seats, more than 40 rounds of .223 caliber ammunition, marijuana and weight scales, the report said.

Witnesses near Eiduk’s home told officers a white SUV had sped through the area after six to eight gunshots were fired. One witness reported seeing smoke as the SUV fled, the report said.

About two hours prior to the shooting at Eiduk’s home, officers had responded to a shots fired call at a residence near Eighth and Lea streets.

Officers noted the Isuzu Rodeo was parked at the residence and empty packaging for ammunition was found in the yard. There were no empty casings or other evidence of a shooting found near the vehicle.

Officers arrested the female owner of the Isuzu Rodeo for possession of marijuana, the report said.

Police said Lopez and several other males at the residence became “enraged” and broke a fence in front of the home as officers were leaving.

The passenger riding with Lopez told officers they went to the jail after officers left to bail the arrested female out and were told to return in an hour.

At that point, the male told officers he had Lopez — his cousin — drop him off at an undisclosed location because he didn’t want to be a part of what he was going to do.

According to the report, he said Lopez picked him up a short time later and told him he had done a “drive-by”.

Whitney said the passenger was a juvenile, whose role in the shooting is still being investigated.

Police also believe there may have been a third person involved, he said.

Lopez is charged with:

• Shooting at an occupied dwelling

• Aggravated assault on a police officer

• Two counts of aggravated assault

• Shooting at a motor vehicle

• Possession of a stolen firearm

• Furnishing alcohol to a minor

• Contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and drug possession.
