Commission set to vote on downtown parking

The Roosevelt County Commission is scheduled to consider replacing parking spaces along Second Street again, as well as to vote on a Memorandum of Agreement that allows for a new public health office building.

The commission meeting is set for 9 a.m. today.

“They are still talking about ripping that (landscaping) strip out and adding spaces,” County Manager Charlene Hardin said of the parking lot issue.

In previous meetings, commissioners have discussed whether parking spaces should be replaced in the courthouse lot along Second Street after recent remodeling shifted them to other sides of the lot. They requested an estimate on the cost of replacing 10 spaces.

Hardin said engineer Chad Lydick provided an estimate of about $36,000 for 14 spaces, the maximum that would fit. However, she said Lydick made the estimate using prices at the time of the remodel, so the cost could go up for the proposed work.

In other business, commissioners are set to vote on a Memorandum of Agreement with the state Department of Health.

It allows the county to use a Department of Health legislative appropriation to build an addition to the La Casa de Buena Salud for the public health office. Hardin said state law requires the county to provide housing for the public health office.

Public Health Nurse Manager Carol Morgan said the addition would be on the east side of the current facility on Fir Street. The separate building would be attached to the existing facility by a covered foyer, she said.

Also, the agenda contains the 2007-2008 fiscal year audit report, which Hardin said wouldn’t become public information until the meeting.
