New ENMU athletic director emphasizes need for strategic plan

PORTALES — Before he begins to work on reviving Eastern new Mexico University’s lagging sports programs on June 15 — his official start date — new Athletic Director Jeff Geiser has another pressing bit of business.

“First thing I’m going to do is go to the bookstore and buy some (Greyhounds and Zias) apparel,” Geiser said Wednesday, prompting applause from spectators gathered at a press conference in Greyhound Arena.

“The situation for me feels right,” Geiser said. “It just feels real comfortable. I can’t wait for June 15th to come down here, roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

Geiser is moving from Alamosa, Colo., where he’s lived since 1984, serving stints as Adams State head football coach and athletic director.

“We’re very excited to work with Dr. Geiser and the resurgence of the athletic programs,” said Eastern football coach Mark Ribaudo, during introductory comments.

“He has excellent credentials and excellent experience — and that’s what we were looking for,” ENMU president Steven Gamble said.
