Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Discover home by getting away

Discover Home, a travel fair/expo sponsored by the 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron, provided maps, brochures and visitor guides about local events, attractions and activities on April 24 at The Landing.

As a Cannon military member and Clovis resident, I believe everyone in this area should take advantage of what Discover Home, as well as what Information, Tickets and Travel and Outdoor Recreation offers. There is so much to do and so many places to go.

For starters, if you love the outdoors, there’s fishing, hiking, and camping at Ute Lake, Fort Sumner Lake and Bottomless Lake, just an hour or so away.

For those who want more of a city, there’s Lubbock and Amarillo, with big-city Texas shopping, entertainment, attractions, and indoor/outdoor events about 100 miles away.

If you like the mountains, they’re three-and-a-half hours away. Ruidoso offers horseback riding, hiking, panoramic views of the countryside, downtown lodging, shopping, and dining.

Santa Fe offers its historic downtown plaza, churches, museums, and a scenic train ride on a restored locomotive. There’s Albuquerque with the Sandia Mountains and Tramway, championship golf courses and nightly entertainment .

These places are only the tip of the iceberg. Most Cannon and Clovis residents know that there are many more places worth exploring, such as Oklahoma City, with a children’s museum, downtown attractions such as a river walk, riverboat ride and the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Colorado has the “mile-high” city of Denver and Colorado Springs is home for the Air Force Academy. San Antonio hosts the famous River Walk and numerous theme parks, water parks and a drive-thru petting zoo.

These places are waiting for you, whether you are traveling individually, with family, with friends, or through trips sponsored by Outdoor Recreation.

Discover Home is your passport to exploration. Fill up the gas tank, pack an overnight bag, get a map and hit the road. Whatever you do, be safe, know your limitations, enjoy the ride, and have a good time.
