Speed limit changes for Perimeter Road

By: 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron

The speed limit on base has changed at three different locations along the south end of Perimeter Road near the Portales Gate.

The first is located upon entering the Portales Gate and traveling toward the Caprock Inn. While approaching the right hand turn running adjacent to Curry County Road R, there are two new signs designating the posted speed limit as 35 mph, one facing either direction of travel. Once the vehicle is travelling straight again, the speed limit returns to the posted 45 mph.

The second sign change is located next to the runway approach lights along the west side of Perimeter Road heading toward South Olympic Blvd. This 35 mph sign replaced the 30 mph speed limit sign and has flashing yellow lights surrounding the sign, similar to the crosswalk sign in front of the base gym. The speed limit at this location remains 35 mph until the vehicle either turns left toward the West Gate, right onto Terminal Road, or continues straight on South Olympic Blvd., where it becomes 30 mph.

The third sign change is located along the east side of Perimeter Road after entering the Portales Gate. Similar to the first sign change, the posted speed limit along this curve is 35 mph and once the vehicle is travelling straight again, the speed limit returns to the posted 45 mph.

The security forces squadron will be posting new speed limit signs in Chavez Manor West housing on Melrose, Illinois, and Dakota Streets. Once posted, another message will be sent with the exact locations.
