Zias notch win over Angelo State

Freedom New Mexico

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior forward Samantha Lawrence scored her 15th goal of the season and seventh match-winner to give the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team a 2-1 Lone Star Conference overtime victory over Angelo State on Friday.

Lawrence poked the ball away from Rambelles defenders in front of the net and scored from about 10 feet away with nearly eight minutes gone in the first of two possible sudden-death OTs. The Zias (9-9, 3-6 LSC) ended a 12-match home winning streak for the Rambelles (10-6-3, 4-3-2), coached by former ENMU coach Travis McCorkle.

The loss put Angelo in danger of not making the six-team LSC postseason tournament for the first time since 2001. The Rambelles need to beat West Texas A&M in Sunday’s regular-season finale and get some help in other league matches to qualify.

Angelo State got on the board in the fourth minute when Shannon Dean scored on a loose ball in front of the net. That held until, with just over six minutes left in regulation, ENMU freshman Tasha Caulder scored her first collegiate goal off a corner kick.

The Zias finished with a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Both ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas and Angelo’s Natalie Shannon were credited with five saves.

The Zias finish the regular season on Sunday with a noon (MST) match at Abilene Christian.

Texas A&M-International 1, ENMU 0 (men) — At Laredo, Texas, Enrique Reyes scored from about 13 yards out midway through the first half and the Dustdevils (12-4) held on to beat the Greyhounds.

Texas A&M-International held ENMU (5-8-2) to only two shots on goal. Hounds goalkeeper Grant Shanahan made five saves in the match.

ENMU continues a stretch of seven consecutive road outings on Sunday with an 11 a.m. (MST) contes against St. Mary’s at San Antonio.
