Cameron sweeps past Zias

PORTALES — Freshman outside hitter Malyssa Acton had 15 kills and three total blocks Thursday night as Cameron kept Eastern New Mexico University winless in Lone Star Conference volleyball with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 victory at Greyhound Arena.

The Aggies (12-9, 4-4 LSC) never trailed by more than three points in the match. Junior outside hitter Lindsay Paziuk added 13 kills and senior middle blocker Whitney Long 10 for Cameron.

ENMU (6-22, 0-7) got 11 kills from sophomore outside hitter Veronica Valdez. Junior libero Caitlin Murphy had 19 digs.

The Zias led 1-0 in Game 1 on a kill by Megan Weitz, but Cameron scored the next four points and never relinquished the lead. ENMU got kills from jessica King, Nicole Vanderploeg and Weitz in a 4-0 run for a 12-10 lead in she second game, but Paziuk’s kill put the Aggies ahead for good 24-23 and they went up 2-0 when the Zias committed an attack error on the next point.

ENMU took its largest lead at 5-2 in the third game on a kill by Valdez, but Cameron took the lead for good 9-8 on a service error by Murphy. The Zias were still within 14-12 after a service error by the Aggies’ Haley Hatch, but Cameron responded with 11 of the final 15 points with Acton getting four kills in that stretch.

The Zias are back in action on Saturday in a 10 a.m. conference match against Midwestern State at Greyhound Arena.
