Club Notes Oct. 19

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met Oct. 8 with 27 members and nine guests present.

The proposed budget for 2008-2009 was distributed and will be voted on at the November meeting.

Amie Franz, corresponding secretary, read thank you notes from the Lance Fletcher family; from the Portales Public Library; and from Anne McMath for the money and items donated to the Wounded Warriers’ Project.

Wanda Pettus, membership chair, introduced and welcomed Alta Elder, Joyce Combs and Sharon King as new members.

Dianne Parker introduced Angela Mowrer, a junior at Portales High School, who told of her experiences when attending the HOBY seminar.

Anne McMath thanked the club for donations for the soldiers at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio. She presented a certificate of appreciation to the club from the American Legion Riders. She said that 99 motorcyclists and three semi-trucks were en route to San Antonio to deliver all of the items collected from New Mexico.

McMath reminded members to turn in items for the Fine Arts competition at the District III convention no later than Oct. 22.

Altrusa

Altrusa Int’l. Inc. of Portales met Oct. 13 at Golden Acres with the meal prepared and served by members of the International Students Club at Eastern New Mexico University.

The meeting was in honor of United Nations Day, and Sue Bracksieck gave the Altrusa Accent based on the UN. Vaunceil Turnbough,

president, presided over the business meeting and conducted the opening ceremonies. Secret pals were thanked. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

The president recognized members who had helped with previous projects. International membership pins were given to new members and their sponsors.

Frankye King reported on proceeds from the Home Tour, and Lori Bohn thanked members for bringing items for Project Heart and recommended that the club continue this project.

Beverly Bennett asked for help on Oct. 25 for Make a Difference Day featuring nationally-known reading specialist Michael Shoulders.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.
