PORTALES — Junior forward Samantha Lawrence broke the school single-season record for goals with two on Sunday, including the match-winner about eight minutes into overtime to give Eastern New Mexico University’s women a 3-2 victory over Texas-Permian Basin at the ENMU soccer pitch.
Lawrence scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season against the Falcons, surpassing the mark of 11 she held with Megan Dozier. It was her seventh game-winning goal of the season, three behind the record held by Dozier, and her 27 career goals leaves her six behind Dozier.
ENMU (6-4) is off to its best start at home at 6-0 in the six-year history of the program.
Brandy Watts scored both goals for UT-Permian Basin (4-7-1). She sent the match into overtime by scoring from about 25 yards out with 7:19 left off an assist from Kelly Wallace.
ENMU took a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes left in the half when senior forward Hillary Gintowt converted her second goal of the season off an assist by freshman defender Mackenzie Morris.
The Zias finish a stretch where they play eight of nine matches at home this weekend, returning to Lone Star Conference play to face Northeastern State at 3 p.m. Friday and East Central at noon on Sunday.
