ENMU names assistant coaches

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University announced the hiring of assistant coaches in baseball and men’s basketball on Wednesday.

The school named former West Texas A&M coach Mark Jones to the baseball position under veteran coach Phil Clabaugh. Jones spent the past nine years at WT before the school did not renew him following the 2008 season.

Meantime, former Michigan State graduate assistant Joe Griffin was added to the men’s basketball program, coached for the past eight seasons by Shawn Scanlan.

Jones, a native of Arlington, Texas, spent 15 years at WT — two as a graduate assistant, five as a full-time assistant before taking over the program in 2000.

Jones played college baseball at UT-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin and Howard Payne.

Griffin, a Michigan native, served two seasons (2006-08) under Tom Izzo at Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., during that time he attained a master’s degree in coaching.

Griffin played two seasons at Saint Clair Community College in Port Huron, Mich. He transferred to Michigan State, where he attained a bachelor’s degree in advertising in 2003.
