Two Clovis LL teams bow out at state

LOS ALAMOS — Albuquerque Westgate used an eight-run fourth to take control en route to a 13-8 victory over Clovis Zia in the state 13-14 Little League tournament on Sunday.

Zia, which lost to Carlsbad 14-1 on Saturday, was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.

“We played a lot better than we did on Saturday,” Zia manager Charles Guthals said. “If we hadn’t given up eight runs in one inning, we might’ve come out on top.”

The eight-run frame broke a 2-2 tie. Zia rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Ean Morris and Matt Mascarenas, to pull within 13-7.

Collin Guthals and Michael Cordova had run-scoring singles for Zia.

In the 9-10 state tournament in Albuquerque, Zia was eliminated in a 12-10 loss to Albuquerque Westgate. No other details were available.

In the 11-12 state meet, Clovis American was playing in a losers bracket game on Monday night. Again, no information was available.

District 3’s other representive, the Roosevelt County 10-11 All-Stars, stayed alive at Deming on Monday night with an 8-4 win over Raton.

Roosevelt County opened tournament play on Saturday with an 18-2 rout of Raton, then lost on Sunday night to Carlsbad 6-3.
