Groups seek funds for tourism events

Seven presenters made 19 requests Tuesday seeking public funds to help promote Clovis and Curry County events that generate tourism dollars.

The request were made during the Clovis Lodger’s Tax Advisory Board’s quarterly meeting at city hall. Assistant City Clerk Claire Burroughes told the board $188,000 is the estimated amount it can disburse for the fiscal year (July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009). The money is collected primarily through part of a 5 percent tax on hotel stays in Clovis.

Selmus Price, the president for Clovis’ branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, sought $2,500 to help print programs for the state NAACP convention, scheduled for Oct. 24-25. It is the first time since 1984 the state convention will be in Clovis.

Price also requested $7,000 for promotion for the annual Clovis/Curry County Ethnic Fair and Parade of Flags and People, an event entering its 17th year.

“It’s been a hard job,” Price said, “but it’s proven to be a big benefactor for Clovis.”

The Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce made the biggest push, requesting $83,000 for 10 events, including the Clovis Music Festival, the High Plains Junior Rodeo Finals and promotional bags that are handed out at conferences and similar events.

“It gives us the means to do our primary job, (which is) promoting Clovis,” said Ernie Kos, executive director of the chamber.

Board President Don David said the board aimed to have its disbursement recommendations ready for Thursday’s city commission meeting.
