Job: Events Coordinator Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce

Background: Barker is from Hobbs, she moved here and got a bachelors degree in communications (public relations) at Eastern New Mexico University. Currently she is working on a masters degree in communications at ENMU.

Q. Describe what your job entails?

A. I help coordinate events, I write press releases, for example, for the Ag Expo or the quilt festival, and there are radio, newspaper, and TV interviews. I also coordinate setup for presentations for events.

Q. What is a typical day on the job like for you?

A. Kind of depends on the event and the weather, whenever we have an upcoming event there will be communication with the vendor or entertainment, if we have it.

Q. Why did you choose this job?

A. Well I’ve always been a people person; I’ve always wanted to utilize my people skills and put my college degree to use. The people here are amazing.

Q. What type of training, if any, do you need for your job?

A. Well when I came in, they were kind of looking for someone for PR, and I pretty much got all my training from my communications classes at ENMU

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?

A. I’m doing what I want to do; there is a saying, “If you enjoy what you do you never work a day in your life.” I enjoy the people I work with and I couldn’t ask for a better boss. The people in Portales are unmatched; the volunteers come out in droves to help.
