Sixty-three percent of voters in last week’s Clovis News Journal Web poll said they are opposed to Sunday alcohol sales at Clovis restaurants. Most of those votes were cast Saturday night.
About 5 p.m. Saturday, the score was 36-9 in favor of Sunday alcohol sales. The final score was 63-37 opposed.
The real election is March 4.

The CNJ editorializes in favor of the Sunday alcohol-sales issue in today’s paper.
We’re not endorsing alcohol consumption; we’re endorsing the rights of responsible restaurant owners and law-abiding citizens to make their own decision.
Those who drink and drive and risk the lives of innocent people don’t follow the rules anyway. Limiting the freedom of responsible people won’t solve the problems related to alcoholism. The issue can only be solved with education – and through the courts.

Six candidates have filed to succeed David Lansford as Clovis’ mayor. Lansford has held the position for 12 years, but announced in November he would not seek re-election.
Auggie Jones of Clovis responded to a question about his choice for mayor:
“Will speak no ill about any of (the candidates), but none measure up to the man currently leading the city,” he wrote in an e-mail.
