LAWTON, Okla. — Fernando Queiroz, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, compiled 14 kills, nine digs and three aces Thursday night to help Cameron hand Eastern New Mexico University a 30-14, 31-29, 30-13 Lone Star Conference volleyball loss.
Freshman middle blocker Ruth Johnson added 12 kills for the Aggies (12-13, 5-4 LSC), who pulled away to the sweep after surviving a close call from the Zias (4-23. 0-10) in the second game.
Freshman outside hitter Veronica Valdez had nine kills for ENMU, while sophomore setter Caitlin Murphy posted a match-high 15 digs.
The Zias led 1-0 and 2-1 in the first game, but the Aggies quickly took control and steadily pulled away.
ENMU then erased a 13-6 deficit in the second game, pulling even 24-24 on a kill by Valdez. After Cameron regained a 27-25 advantage, the Zias pulled ahead briefly on three Aggies attack errors, but they couldn’t hold on.
Two kills by Johnson finished out the game for Cameron.
The Zias were guilty of attack errors on the first three points of the third game. They pulled even 4-4 on an ace by Murphy — their only one of the match — before Queiroz put together three kills in a 6-0 run that gave Cameron control.
ENMU travels to Wichita Falls on Saturday for a 1 p.m. (MDT) conference match against Midwestern State. The Zias finish the season at home next Thursday against Southeastern Oklahoma.
