A team from Fort Sumner High School was one of 22 teams selected to participate in the Microsoft Innovative Teaching Forum Sept. 27-28 in Redmond, Wash., according to a Fort Sumner news release.
Fort Sumner’s El Zorro Ink desktop publishing project was selected as one of the top collaborative teaching projects in the United States by a professional panel selected by the National Staff Development Council and National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, the release reads.
For the El Zorro Ink project, secondary students interview elementary ones and create poster-sized documents with photos. Production quality, deadlines and customer satisfaction are involved for the El Zorro Ink student and staff team, providing workforce skills competency development, according to the release.
Fort Sumner high school team members include teachers Sharon West, technology; Cathy Fikany, English and social studies; and Sandra Wertheim, Spanish and social studies; and Fort Sumner Schools Superintendent Patricia D. Miller.
The 2007 Forum brings together exemplary K-12 learning teams for two days on Microsoft’s corporate campus to afford the opportunity to share expertise.
A subset of attendees will be selected to represent the United States at the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teachers Forum in Finland in November.
ENMU registration, holiday days set
Friday is the last day for late registration for the fall semester at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, which began Monday, according to an ENMU news release.
The semester ends Dec. 14, with spring commencement set for the next day.
Many of ENMU’s courses can be taken online, or through video conferencing in Artesia, at Cannon Air Force Base, Hobbs, Roswell and Ruidoso.

The Portales campus will be closed Monday for Labor Day, according to an ENMU press release.
ENMU’s Golden Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The campus and classes will resume at the regular time on Tuesday.
Wayland Baptist to graduate 39
The Wayland Baptist University-Clovis campus will hold fall commencement exercises at 10 a.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church, according to a university news release.
Eight students will receive master’s degrees and 31 will earn bachelor’s degrees, according to Clovis Campus Dean Gary Mitchell.
Elane Seebo, associate vice president of external campuses for Wayland Baptist University, will deliver the commencement address. Wayland Baptist’s president, Paul Armes, will confer the degrees during the ceremony.
The following students will receive master’s degrees, all in education: Tandee G. Delk, Tammy L. Jacobs, Peggy S. Massey, Amanda Nutt, Christal Marie Reid, Shannon Nichole Richmond, Katherine J. Roberts and Deborah Westbrook.
The following students will receive bachelor’s degrees: Adrian David Ancira, John Michael Barta II, Crystal Rae Benfield, Barbara Ann Bostic, Tina La Vonne Bryant, Gregory Bernard Burney, Drake L. Davidson, Quianna Enang, Kimberly D. Figueroa, Jennifer R. Fontaine, Kathy E. Gomez, Holly Ann Jackson, Cotina Crystal Johnson, Jennie Michelle King, Ronnie R. One student, Sarah A. Cook, will receive recognition for completing Wayland’s post-baccalaureate, state-approved Teacher Certification program.
ENMU faculty art on exhibit
An exhibit of faculty art will be on display at Eastern New Mexico University in the Runnels Gallery of the Golden Library, according to an ENMU news release.
A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday to mark its opening.
The exhibition will be available during library hours through Sept. 20, and is free.
